Oman Sustainability Week Awards 2024 Set to Recognise Leading Organisations in Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility
Muscat, Oman, 01 October 2023

1st October, Muscat – Oman Sustainability Week (OSW) Awards 2024, a prestigious event co-organised by Oman Environmental Services Holding Company, “be'ah” and CONNECT, is set to recognise and celebrate outstanding sustainability achievements during the highly anticipated Oman Sustainability Week (OSW) 2024.

The OSW Awards aligns with the Oman Sustainability Index (OSI) that is used to rate performance in environment, society and governance (ESG). The OSI in the context of the OSW Awards will have a dual purpose in evaluating organisations. Firstly, it will aim to provide an assessment platform, allowing companies to gauge their sustainability performance and integrate ethical practices into their corporate strategies. Additionally, it will emphasise the enduring nature of economic, social and environmental responsibility commitments.

Participating organisations at the OSW Awards will leverage the OSI as a tool for conducting a situational analysis, enabling them to assess their current sustainability standing in comparison to industry peers. This process will also assist in identifying both medium and long-term risks and opportunities. Looking ahead, the index is set to serve as a means of recognising organisations for their contributions to sustainability. Simultaneously, it will encourage them to remain steadfast in their pursuit of sustainability objectives, thereby further enhancing transparency and credibility within their respective sectors in a quantifiable fashion.

This third edition of OSW Awards promises to be a remarkable gathering, featuring high-ranking officials, dignitaries and notable figures from various sectors, including His Excellency Salim bin Nasser bin Said Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals and His Excellency Saeed bin Hamoud bin Saeed Al Mawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology as well as several Undersecretaries and prominent C-suite industry leaders. Scheduled to be held at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) on 28th of April 2024, the OSW Awards will honour organisations that have demonstrated exemplary dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

“The Oman Sustainability Week Awards is one of the important recognitions in encouraging small and medium-sized companies, universities and large companies to present their best in terms of sustainability in the work environment and its application of the highest international standards. The evaluation is done through a recognised international institution that uses the best global approaches in evaluations,” said His Excellency Salim Al Aufi.

Organisations that have successfully embraced sustainable practices founded on ESG principles will take centre stage at OSW Awards 2024. These accolades highlight the harmonious alignment of these organisations with the ambitious goals of Oman Vision 2040, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and the national Net Zero by 2050 commitment. OSI, the framework guiding these awards, is based on the internationally recognized Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standard, and is a product of collaborative efforts with the Center for Sustainability and Excellence (CSE) in Chicago, Illinois.

His Excellency Saeed Al Mawali, commented, "We call upon all governmental and private institutions to embrace initiatives and projects that align with the national commitment to reducing emissions. This alignment is in harmony with Oman's Vision 2040 and its dedication to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations, as well as its ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by the year 2050. This call-to-action spans various sectors and domains, including but not limited to electricity, energy, environmental conservation, waste management, and water resources. Equally important are the sectors of transportation, communications, and information technology, where we are actively promoting and supporting a range of digital projects and technologies.”

“One notable initiative we are championing is the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. To facilitate this, we have strategically deployed approximately 100 electric charging stations across numerous provinces in the Sultanate of Oman. We extend an invitation to all those who share our commitment to environmental sustainability to participate in the Eco-Mobility' initiative. This initiative will be a prominent feature of Oman Sustainability Week, designed to bolster eco-friendly transportation objectives within the Sultanate. ‘Eco-Mobility' will serve as a dynamic platform for industry leaders to showcase cutting-edge technologies and innovations in the field of environmentally conscious transportation. This collective effort will further solidify Oman's strides toward establishing a carbon-neutral economy,” he added.

This year, a new category, ‘Eco-Mobility', has been introduced along with ‘Employees’ and ‘Organisations mature in sustainability strategy’, complementing the existing ESG award submission categories, which encompass Government, Academia, Small Businesses and the Medium to Large Businesses. Notably, the Eco-Mobility category will be assessed through a specialised framework established by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology. These categories will provide a platform for organisations to showcase their sustainability efforts, achievements and contribution to national objectives.

“The OSW Awards is an annual event dedicated to recognising the significant contributions made by companies in the Sultanate of Oman in the fields of sustainability and corporate social responsibility. These awards hold substantial importance in raising awareness about the crucial significance of embracing sustainability principles and aligning them with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. In line with Oman Vision 2040's commitment to achieving sustainable economic development while emphasising environmental, social and governance principles, these awards serve as a significant platform for acknowledging organisations that play a pivotal role in realising these goals through the adoption of sustainable and socially responsible practices,” commented Dr Mohab Ali Al Hinai, Vice President – Sustainability and Circular Economy at be'ah.

The timelines for the OSI begin with the call for ‘expression of interest’, opening on the 1st of October 2023 and closing on the 9th of November 2023. A Submission Training session by CSE is scheduled for 28th November 2023, followed by the submission window for organisations between 29th November 2023 to 8th of February 2024. CSE will assess submissions throughout March 2024 and announce finalists in April 2024. The OSW awards ceremony will take place on 28th April 2024, followed by the issuance of feedback reports to participating organizations in May 2024.

The overarching theme of OSW 2024, ‘Sustainable Living in a Circular Society’, serves as the guiding beacon, setting the stage for a dynamic week filled with insightful discussions and transformative actions. At its heart is the Oman Sustainability Week Awards, acting as the driving force behind a week-long initiative that encompasses a diverse range of activities. These include an expansive exhibition, a thought-provoking conference, a summit that gathers key industry leaders, informative workshops, enlightening site visits, CSR activities and engaging community initiatives. The aim of the OSI and OSW Awards is to cultivate awareness surrounding sustainability issues and ignite a passion for responsible and sustainable practices within the realm of corporate and government strategies. Moreover, these awards underscore the profound significance of dedicated efforts aimed at championing social and environmental causes, recognising them as fundamental pillars for achieving sustainable, long-term economic growth.

Oman Design and Build Week hosts 3-Day conference; receives overwhelming participation
Muscat, Oman, 13 March 2023

13 March 2023, Muscat: Globally, real estate development has been identified as a crucial driver of economic growth. With the Sultanate of Oman exerting increased focus on diversifying its revenue channels, the attention has also been directed to stimulating the promising real estate market. Given the scenario, the ongoing Oman Design and Build Week (ODBW), which commenced on 13 March and will go on until 15 March 2023 at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Center, has positioned itself as a unique platform to trigger further development in the sector by showcasing the various lucrative investment opportunities available in the local market, providing a bridge between buyers and sellers, and highlighting the latest innovations in the industry. An important part of ODBW, which has garnered the attention of individuals and corporate companies from a cross-section of society, is the 3-day CPD-accredited ODBW conference. It is geared at sharing valuable insights into the working of the real estate market, the government endeavours to strengthen the regulatory environment and accelerate foreign direct investment, and the nation’s keen focus on establishing itself as a new destination for sustainable cities.

In the same context, it is also important to note that the data issued by the National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI) recorded the value of real estate trading in Oman until the end of December 2022 at OMR 2,706,100,000, which is a steady increase of six per cent compared to the same period in 2021 when the value stood at OMR 2,552,500,000.

Commenting on the conference, Ashley Roberts, Managing Director, CONNECT said, “The ODWW Conference has come at a time when the local real estate industry is seeing a significant boom. By being a platform that facilitates high-level discussions, the conference seeks to bring about qualitative change by boosting collaboration between key stakeholders in the industry. At the same time, it is a unique opportunity for the attendees to learn about emerging trends and cutting-edge technologies that can potentially impact how the market functions. Such conferences go beyond knowledge sharing – it gives an untarnished and unbiased outlook of where the industry stands, the challenges and opportunities that exist in the market, and the efforts that need to be taken to attain the overarching vision.”

Following an inspirational speech by Sadiq Jafaar Sulaiman, the Chairman of Oman Real Estate Association, the official inauguration of Oman Design and Build Week and Oman Real Estate Conference 2023 took place. On the sidelines, the Greater Muscat Development Plan was also unveiled. HE Dr Khalfan Bin Said al Shuaili, the Minister of Housing and Urban Planning delivered a welcome speech that preceded a stellar video demonstration of the future cities of Oman.

The conference commenced with an overview of the potential the real estate market holds in the years to come before taking a deeper dive into the broad outlook for the sector. With the residential real estate market in Oman projected to develop at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 13 per cent from 2022 to 2027, the Omani government is taking concerted efforts to make housing more affordable and accessible. This has, in turn, led to greater levels of liquidity in the local market. Under the advocacy of ‘Housing for All Citizens’, the developments have taken a holistic stance and extend beyond the capital city of Muscat. After the Integrated Housing Development Project in Barka, there are new projects scheduled in the governates of Musandam, Dhofar, South Al Sharqiyah, North Al Sharqiyah, North Al Batinah, and South Al Batinah. With such investments in the sector, the panel discussion also underscored the quintessential role that the real estate industry plays in developing the governorates as a whole as the benefits filter to other areas such as contracting, marketing, facility maintenance and management.

Keeping pace with the evolving real estate ecosystem, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning has also embraced digitalisation to make dealing in the real estate market more convenient, transparent, and quick. At the same time, the Capital Market Authority is also exploring the possibility of including real estate tokenisation in its virtual asset regulatory framework. An interesting topic of debate at the panel discussions, therefore, was digital transformation and the metaverse. With global interest now steering towards the metaverse and real estate parcels available in the virtual environment, the Sultanate has put its digitalisation agenda on overdrive. Strategic investments in digitalisation that incorporate artificial intelligence and data science have gone from being a business tool to an important aspect of how businesses are conducted. A life-like virtual representation of the Greater Muscat project as well as the upcoming Integrated Tourism Complexes (ITCs) are an example of how digitalisation has come into play.

With ITCs being another highlight of the agenda, the panellists appreciated how the Sultanate has maintained the right supply to match demand and made sure that each project is built with industry best practices in mind. With as many as 21 ITC projects in the Sultanate spread across various governates, the government seeks to attract investments of about OMR 3 billion between 2021 and 2023. The ITCs include premium development projects as well as affordable home solutions for citizens, residents, and foreign investors.

The panellists also acknowledged another critical parameter of real estate – finance. Apart from being a stable economy, the Sultanate has also witnessed key legislative reforms and the introduction of stringent policies to promote good governance, and this applies to the real estate sector too. The availability of Escrow accounts for projects has given a huge boost to investor confidence and also ensured that developer interests are protected. Prominent banks have gone the extra mile to make the process of opening escrow accounts easier. The availability of other complementary services like accurate real estate valuation has also been a vital contributor to bolstering trust in the sector. The panel discussions will conclude with a special session on governance led by the Owners’ Associations.

The comprehensive agenda of the ODBW conference offers attendees a two-fold benefit as the talks not only highlight critical aspects of the real estate sector and provide meaningful knowledge but also allows participants to engage one-on-one with key industry experts.

Entry to the exhibition and conference is free of charge. To know more, visit www.omandesignandbuildweek.com

Successful relationships build strong sales.
Muscat, Oman, 22 October 2020

The strength of the relationships the Omanexpo sales team has built has resulted in it retaining almost every one of its clients throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. The business has seven large shows booked for 2021 and out of 497 contracted exhibitors before any event postponement, the team has lost only a single exhibitor, testimony to its strong focus on building durable relationships.

One of the key behaviours allowing for this success, is the quality of the relationships the sales team has built and sustained with their clients. The team has been actively creating opportunities to contact their exhibitors throughout the event cycle, not just on an annual re-booking basis. Marketing tools such as show previews and social media posts are examples of ways the event sales team can proactively reach out to exhibiting companies in a customer service capacity and for those clients to proactively contact Omanexpo.

As an exhibition and conference organiser, Omanexpo is also innovating and adapting with the support of technology and the adoption of virtual platforms and webinars from February 2020. These have led to new value-led opportunities for exhibitors to engage with audiences and enabled Omanexpo to deliver meaningful, insightful content to its clients and audiences.

Acknowledging that people buy from people is central to the focus and our salespeople make a point of getting to know their clients personally, taking an interest in them holistically to broaden their understanding of the clients’ needs and the wider market.

The business is creating reasons for networking to happen, allowing relationships to build throughout the year and not just around an annual event.

Much of the groundwork around sales comes through developing personal relationships with small start-up businesses who, as they grow, seek out larger scale events to exhibit at.

Nurturing emerging talent is increasingly being recognised as an important part of the sales pipeline.

Finally, the combined efforts of the finance and commercial teams, working in parallel to accommodate payment terms that work for both Omanexpo and its clients is underpinning strong relationships to support sales.

Restarting events, bringing audiences back together and keeping businesses alive to support the economy has been a key objective in the events industry throughout this period. The businesses that don’t just survive but thrive in the new world will be those that have adapted and maximised the opportunities that have come their way to create better ways of engaging customers, delivering value and ultimately converting sales.

Oman Design & Build Week expands its building, technology and automation segment
Muscat, Oman, 02 February 2020

Trends in the construction sector are changing the business and global landscape. For the industry, Oman’s in particular, there is a need to adopt new practices, embrace new technologies, automate new systems, and espouse innovation in order to move it forward.

Oman Design & Build Week (formerly The BIG Show Oman), in its uppermost aim to support the development initiatives of the government above and beyond its commitment to continuously provide business and investment opportunities to companies in the sector, is ramping up efforts to expand its building, technology and automation segment.

This year, in this landmark show’s 17th edition, organizer Omanexpo has introduced a dedicated zone for local and international companies to showcase safety and security products and systems, home automation systems, software and project management systems, smart building systems, building technology and equipment, fire protection systems and other innovative and modern technologies in construction that very well represent the digital and technology transformation direction that Oman is taking.

In line with the Vision 2040, where Oman aims to “achieve a digital transformation by deploying Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and other enablers of technological progress,” the government has launched smart city initiatives alongside its e-government initiatives.

Underlining efforts to move towards implementing smart solutions and developing smart city projects are the ongoing key constructions such as the Duqm Smart City (US$ 40 billion), Madinat Al Irfan (also known as the City of the Future, estimated at US$ 5 billion), and the Oman-China Industrial City (US$ 10.7 billion).

Tarek Ali, Senior Event Director, Oman Design & Build Week, says “More and more companies are catching up with the construction tech space and moving away from traditional building methods and materials with the aim to improve efficiency and productivity, reduce cost, speed up the building process, and in the long run, increase profitability. We are glad to provide a platform for these companies who could benefit much from the evolving needs of the industry.”

Occupying the building, technology and innovation zone will be a UK pavilion that will feature companies such as Atamate Ltd, Nudura, Typhoon Performance Products, Reacton Fire Suppression Ltd, HSBCAD Limited and Videcon Ltd, and more, apart from companies from Oman, Qatar and the UAE.

Adding value to the zone are the free-to-attend workshops that will focus on Building Information Modeling (BIM), simulation through Virtual Reality (VR), 4D planning and scheduling. The workshops are certified by CPD and Project Management Institute (PMI).

Oman Design & Build Week is co-located with the third Oman Real Estate Expo, which is supported by the Ministry of Housing and the Oman Real Estate Association (ORA). It is scheduled from March 30 to April 1, 2020 at the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre (OCEC).

Blaskey kicked off the session with Master Class “Challenges Exhibitors Face in Driving Best and Measurable Results.” It was followed by a case study presentation by Tatyana Garina, Marketing Manager, Eastern Hemisphere, Halliburton, who addressed questions from the exhibitors during the Q&A session. Blaskey presented the second Master Class, which focused on “Case Histories.”

The event received a positive reception from companies from both the construction and oil and gas sectors, boding well for the forthcoming events. The organizers are assured that their exhibitors are better equipped with the appropriate strategic tools to maximize their return on investment, allowing for a better show experience.

Commenting on the event, long-time exhibitor Waleed Associates says “We would like to thank Omanexpo for this opportunity. We always look forward to participating at OPES, which is a major event in Oman, because this platform helps us tremendously to engage with our existing customers as well as new and potential ones across all sectors.”

“The Exhibitor Strategy Day is a very good initiative by Omanexpo. It helps us to strategize in a refreshing way, learn certain things while unlearning others which have become obsolete in these times. We are always grateful to Omanexpo, who has always been a supporting partner.”

Blaskey says, “I am delighted to be invited by Omanexpo to help their exhibitors get really good results when they exhibit at the forthcoming shows in March. I believe that some organizers at trade shows are more enlightened than others and Omanexpo is, as they have invested quite a lot of money, time and resources and bringing in about a hundred exhibitors together to hear how they can get the most from either OPES or Oman Design & Build events.”

“Exhibitions is about meeting new people. It is about initiating and developing relationships and Omanexpo has created the forum to do that with its highly professional exhibitions. I am looking forward to really see professional and exciting stands by the participants who came to the Master Class and who are serious about investing in the oldest form of marketing in the world—face-to face,” he concludes.

Omanexpo and NextFairs Announce Partnership to Organize Trade Shows in the Region
Muscat, Oman, 26 January 2019

Omanexpo and NextFairs today announced their collaboration after the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop and organize high-profile, highly targeted trade exhibitions and conferences in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

Omanexpo and NextFairs’ move to form a strategic alliance follows both their objectives to ultimately provide companies with more dynamic platforms that will enable them to adapt to evolving global trends, practices and technologies and exponentially grow their businesses.

Omanexpo is the pioneer and biggest international trade show organizer in Oman with more than 30 years of organizing internationally certified events that cover key industries in the sultanate. NextFairs is Qatar’s leading event organizer, recognized as a market leader in providing integrated business solutions across sectors and a 15-year in-depth market knowledge of the MENA region.

The exhibitions industry is continuously transforming, as business models are changing, trends are emerging and formats are converging. This necessitates the need for new and deeper collaboration and international partnerships that will promote stronger growth markets.

Ashley Roberts, Acting General Manager and Portfolio Director of Omanexpo, says, “As organizers, we aim to provide more rewarding experiences for our exhibitors and visitors. By aligning our resources, core competencies, and competitive advantages with a solid and professional organization such as NextFairs, we are in a more advantageous position to deliver better services, present new market opportunities and leverage the positive development and strong growth in the region.”

“We see a potentially strong partnership with Omanexpo as it redefines its show objectives in order to ensure more beneficial results for its customers. This is where the value of providing business intelligence and processes comes to fore. It is our pleasure to partner with Omanexpo to provide platforms of growth for the exhibition and conference sector in Qatar and other countries and fulfill the needs of an ever-changing event landscape,” Rawad Sleem, General Manager, NextFairs remarks.

The first planned exhibition that will be announced soon will provide an ideal platform for exhibitors and buyers to enter into deals, network amongst each other and contribute to the development of the economy. This will make it possible for SMEs and entrepreneurs to review the best solutions and products and discuss new trends as a key objective to promote the exhibition industry and put Qatar on the international map of specialized professional exhibitions,” Sleem adds.

with huge investments being undertaken by governments and businesses in the region. In the most recent UFI global exhibitions report, it calculated that the Middle East alone serves 125,000 exhibiting companies, 6.3 million visitors and supports more than 31,000 jobs.

With the precarious political and economic situations in the West, many of the Top 20 Exhibition Organisers are looking East to secure and grow their future business.

This is confidence is cemented by the actions of UFI who only last month announced a new partnership with Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre for the first Exhibition Management Degree (EMD) Programme in Muscat and, will be bringing its international conference to Oman in November 2020.

Against the struggle and competition of the packed marketplace of Europe, organisers often battle with each other for airtime and marketing spend however, the Middle East has many unexplored sectors in which events have yet to be launched.

The potential is huge and no-where is this truer than Oman. The impact of the Oman Vision 2040 powered by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, has seen a new region-wide development of infrastructure including a new airport and state-of-the-art exhibition and conference centre. Developments such as these have only had a positive impact on the exhibition industry in the region – something I’m not sure this can be said for every government in the Western world.

Many places in the Middle East are becoming much more accessible for UK citizens and are offering more opportunities to talented exhibition professionals who are more entrepreneur in spirit.

In the past, heading to the UAE was a quick way for the international community to ‘get ahead’ and make a quick tax-free buck with a two-year deadline. Today, the region is home to almost 200,000 Brits living in the UAE, a huge increase from 20,000 in 2008* - and they’re not leaving.

Political instability of Europe and the US is driving up the expat community who are now looking to plant roots in the Middle East, at least for the middle-term. Where exhibitions add 1.4 billion USD to the Middle East economy and an enormous appetite to grow this further, there has never been more potential for individuals to make the leap and build a long-term career in the region.

With so much on offer for exhibition organisers, not forgetting of course the promise of sunnier climes, its perhaps time you took a fresh look at the Middle East for your future.

Omanexpo and ORA Announce the Dates for the 3rd Oman Real Estate Exhibition & Conference 2020
Muscat, Oman, 15 October 2019

Omanexpo, the organizer of Oman Real Estate Expo (OREX), and Oman Real Estate Association (ORA), Oman’s real estate regulating body, along with the Real Estate Development Directorate of the Ministry of Housing has announced that the third edition is slated from March 30 to April 1, 2020 at the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre.

The announcement was made at a press conference held on Tuesday at the W Muscat Hotel. Members of the panel who addressed the media were Engr. Siham Al Harthy, Director General, Real Estate Development Directorate, Ministry of Housing; Hassan Juma al Lawati, Chairman, ORA; Andy White, General Manager, Omanexpo; and Tarek Ali, Exhibition Director, Omanexpo. Also present were the board members of ORA.

Following the successful previous editions in 2018 and 2019, the organizers are anticipating the same enthusiastic response from the business sector. Tarek Ali comments, “OREX will continue to be an appealing platform for local and international investors as it highlights the growing potential of Oman’s real estate market and provides a compact marketplace for sellers and buyers to meet and leverage business opportunities.”

“Despite the recent oil downturn, the property sector is slowly recovering and creating fresh opportunities for tenants and property buyers. This edition will help in further stimulating the market by showcasing what the local developers have to offer. This includes affordable housing, offering long-term installment plans and freehold opportunities for expatriates,” he adds.

According to ORA, the country’s real estate sector is strong, owing to “stabilizing crude oil prices, increased real estate activity and improved economic conditions.” Currently, there is a spate of development projects—residential, commercial, mixed-use and integrated tourism complexes (ITCs) happening all over Oman. Developments such as including Naseem A’Sabah (US$1.04 billion), Sur Gate Project (US$311.7 million), Quriyat ITC Project (US$1 billion), Diyar Ras Al Hadd Resort, Omagine Project, Al Nakheel, and Hawana Lagoons Salalah have led to expansion of the housing market in terms of growth and value.

In 2018, the government has announced its decision to open the doors to real estate investment for expatriates living in Oman. The Capital Market Authority (CMA) also announced its approval to introduce Real Estate Investment Trust funds (REITs) in the Oman, which is seen as “a good vehicle that promises to bring liquidity into the real estate market and encourage developers to come up with different real estate products for investors,” Al Lawati says.
